In September , Martin Campbell and director of photography Phil Meheux were scouting Paradise Island in the Bahamas as a possible location for the film.

In addition to the extensive location filming, studio work including choreography and stunt co-ordination practice was performed at the Barrandov Studios in Prague, and at Pinewood Studios, where the film used several stages, the paddock tank and the Stage.

Further shooting in the UK was scheduled for Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey, the cricket pavilion at Eton College although that scene was cut from the completed movie and the Millbrook Vehicle Proving Ground in Bedfordshire.

After Prague, the production moved to the Bahamas. Several locations around New Providence were used for filming during February and March, particularly on Paradise Island.

Other scenes in the latter half of the film were shot in late May and early June at the Villa del Balbianello on the shores of Lake Como. A recreation of the Body Worlds exhibit provided a setting for one scene in the film.

The exhibition's developer and promoter, German anatomist Gunther von Hagens , also has a cameo appearance in the film, [46] although only his trademark hat is actually visible on screen.

In designing the credit sequence for the film, graphic designer Daniel Kleinman was inspired by the cover of the British first edition of Casino Royale , which featured Ian Fleming's original design of a playing card bordered by eight red hearts dripping with blood.

Kleinman said, "The hearts not only represent cards but the tribulations of Bond's love story. So I took that as inspiration to use playing card graphics in different ways in the titles," like a club representing a puff of gun smoke, and slashed arteries spurting thousands of tiny hearts.

Kleinman decided not to use the female silhouettes commonly seen throughout the Bond title sequences, considering that the women did not fit with both the film's spirit and the storyline following Bond falling in love.

For the rest of the film, Chris Corbould , the special effects and miniature effects supervisor, returned to a more realistic style of film making and significantly reduced digital effects.

According to Corbould, "CGI is a great tool and can be very useful, but I will fight to the tooth and nail to do something for real.

It's the best way to go". First on the schedule were the scenes on the Madagascar building site, shot in the Bahamas on the site of a derelict hotel which Michael G.

The stunt team built a model and put forward several ways in which the digger could conceivably take out the concrete, including taking out the pillar underneath.

A section of the concrete wall was removed to fit the digger and reinforced with steel. The modified aircraft had the outboard engines replaced by external fuel tanks, while the inboard engines were replaced by a mock-up pair of engines on each inboard pylon.

The cockpit profile was altered to make the look like a prototype of an advanced airliner. The sinking of the Venetian house at the climax of the film featured the largest rig ever built for a Bond film.

The rig, weighing some 90 tons, incorporated electronics with hydraulic valves which were closely controlled by computer because of the dynamic movement within the system on its two axes.

The same computer system also controlled the exterior model, which the effects team had built to one-third scale in order to film the building eventually collapsing into the Venetian canal.

The model elevator within the rig could be immersed in 19 feet 5. The soundtrack of Casino Royale , released by Sony Classical Records on 14 November , featured music composed by veteran composer David Arnold , his fourth soundtrack for the Bond film series, while Nicholas Dodd orchestrated and conducted the score.

The classic theme only plays during the end credits to signal the climax of his character arc. Only two days following the premiere, unlicensed copies appeared for sale in London.

Craig himself was offered such a DVD while walking anonymously through the streets of Beijing wearing a hat and glasses to avoid being identified.

In January , Casino Royale became the first Bond film ever to be shown in mainland Chinese cinemas. The Chinese version was edited before release, with the reference to the Cold War re-dubbed and new dialogue added during the poker scene explaining the process of Texas hold 'em , as the game is less familiar in China this addition is reminiscent of dialogue that was added to the American TV adaptation to explain the rules of baccarat , the game featured in the original book.

Casino Royale was the 4th highest-grossing film of , and was the highest-grossing instalment of the James Bond series until Skyfall surpassed it in November As well as features present from the release, the collector's edition contains an audio commentary , deleted scenes, featurettes and a storyboard-to-film comparison.

Casino Royale was released a third time on Blu-ray in with DTS audio and deleted scenes, but with less special features than the edition.

In the United States, two fight scenes were censored to achieve a PG rating: The German edit of the film cuts a sequence where the bomb-planter at the airport breaks a man's neck, instead replacing it with an alternative take.

The mainland Chinese cut of the film also trims the torture scene and the stairway fight, as well as a shot of Bond cleaning his wound at the hotel, and a boat scene.

Critics responded with praise to the film, in particular to Craig's performance and credibility. During production, Craig had been subject to debate by the media and the public, as he did not appear to fit Ian Fleming's original portrait of the character as tall, dark and suave.

The Times compared Craig's portrayal of the character to that of Timothy Dalton , and praised the action as "edgy", [79] with another reviewer citing in particular the action sequence involving the cranes in Madagascar.

The film was similarly well received in North America. MSNBC gave the movie a perfect 5 star rating. The site's critical consensus reads, " Casino Royale disposes of the silliness and gadgetry that plagued recent James Bond outings, and Daniel Craig delivers what fans and critics have been waiting for: This is a screwed-up Bond, a rogue Bond, a bounder, a scrapper and, in the movie's astoundingly bleak coda, an openhearted lover.

Vicky Allan of the Sunday Herald noted Bond himself, and not his love interests, was sexually objectified in this film. A moment where he rises from the sea is reminiscent of Ursula Andress in Dr.

No ; he feels "skewered" by Vesper Lynd's criticism of him; "and though it would be almost unthinkable now have a female character in a mainstream film stripped naked and threatened with genital mutilation, that is exactly what happens to Bond in [the film].

Furthermore, I consider Daniel Craig to be the most effective and appealing of the six actors who have played , and that includes even Sean Connery.

Roger Moore wrote, "Daniel Craig impressed me so greatly in his debut outing, Casino Royale , by introducing a more gritty, unrefined edge to the character that I thought Sean [Connery] might just have to move over.

Craig's interpretation was like nothing we'd seen on screen before; Jimmy Bond was earning his stripes and making mistakes.

It was intriguing to see him being castigated by M, just like a naughty schoolboy would be by his headmaster.

The script showed him as a vulnerable, troubled, and flawed character. Quite the opposite to my Bond! Craig was, and is, very much the Bond Ian Fleming had described in the books — a ruthless killing machine.

It was a Bond that the public wanted. However, the film met with mixed reactions from other critics. Rob Gonsalves of eFilmCritic.

He said she had "a prickly demeanor" and her insecurities would be interpreted as arrogance by her male superiors, and she would less likely be promoted.

She counteracted his psychological observations by sizing up Bond, believing he disdainfully dressed up, and he didn't "come from money. She thought he was "maladjusted" but refrained from calling him "a cold-hearted bastard" but still imagined that he thought of women "as disposable pleasures rather than meaningful pursuits.

In Montenegro, their cover story was that Vesper was to masquerade as Bond's love interest at the Hotel Splendid in a shared two-bedroom suite.

He would be Mr. Arlington Beech, a professional gambler, and he joked that she was Miss Stephanie Broadchest. She asked about the sleeping arrangements: Before the big game, Bond ordered Vesper to wear a purple dress with plunging neckline so that she would distract the other players.

She countered by providing him with a dinner jacket fitted to his size: When Bond took a break from the game and kissed her to create a new "cover" , she said she was "pissed off" that he was losing so quickly.

During the first break in the game, Vesper helped Bond to kill one of Le Chiffre's terrorist customers in a vicious hand-to-hand fight in the hotel's stairwell.

Distraught by the killing "It's like there's blood on my hands, it's not coming off" , she crouched under the shower in their hotel's suite, where he comforted her.

During another round of the game, Bond lost everything when he called Le Chiffre's suspected bluff - he lost a full house to four jacks.

All you're going to do now is lose more". He called her "a bloody idiot. However, when he was poisoned by villainous Bond girl Valenka Ivana Milicevic see above , she saved Bond's life when he passed out and reattached one of the disconnected defibrillator electrodes to his heart to revive him.

He commented on her necklace, calling it an Algerian love knot - given to her by a "very lucky man.

Bond suspected foul-play and rushed to the hotel entrance to see Vesper pushed into Le Chiffre's black Jaguar during an abduction. He pursued - and at the top of a small hill violently swerved his car to the right to avoid hitting Vesper who was bound up and lying in the middle of the road.

After a series of flips in the scary car crash, Le Chiffre's right-hand man removed the tracking device from Bond's forearm and the two were taken prisoner.

They escaped from being tortured to death by the intervention of Mr. White Jesper Christensen , who killed Le Chiffre and his gang members. While Bond was recuperating, Vesper awakened Bond and commented on his look: You can have me anywhere Yeah, here, there, anywhere you like.

They were interrupted by Swiss banker Mr. When Mendel left, Vesper confided in Bond about her love for him: You've stripped it from me Whatever is left of me, whatever I am, I'm yours.

For a couple of days, they spent an idyllic time on the beaches of Italy. There, Bond told Vesper how he had suspected that Mathis was a double agent - Mathis had tipped off Le Chiffre about how Bond had learned of his 'tell' and tracking implant - "That's how he wiped me out.

Same goes for the implant. I wonder if that's why I love you. But I think that's gonna have to be you. Because I've no idea what an honest job is.

As they sailed into Venice's port, Vesper noticed a mysterious individual on the dock with a panama hat and one blacked-out lens, later identified as bad-guy Gettler Richard Sammel.

Bond sent in his resignation by email to M. Bond trailed her carrying the money in a briefcase as she walked through the streets of Venice.

After she handed the briefcase over to bad guy Gettler, Bond killed a number of henchmen and Gettler but she was taken hostage and locked in an iron-cage elevator.

Bond fired on large pontoons to flood the lower part of the building and to escape the gunfire, but inadvertently sent the elevator plunging into the water below the collapsing building.

She knew that her betrayal and treachery couldn't be excused, and she kissed Bond's hand to redemptively remove the guilt associated with her inevitable death.

She kisses them and then checks off the marks on a clipboard. Then we get a heavy dose of the white savior, another way that Mata is just like her dad, in the way that she talks about and to the Thai people who literally treat her as a god.

It was a break from the weird jokes. At least it was, until Mata Bond kind of hit on her dad. Because James Bond is so attractive, so virile, and so tempting to sex-starved women of all ages that even his own daughter is tempted.

I mean overall, this was just a bad movie for female characters. With the Eon Production James Bond films I can often point out one or two female characters that have agency or that break out of trope-y molds.

The humor is so bad. Noah shows up and is a general creepy loser. The only good thing about this movie was Orson Welles as Le Chiffre.

Satire and parody are supposed to punch up. Unfortunately, it seems as if the directors for the film had no idea what they were doing and so we got this horrible movie.

I take back every single thing that I said about looking forward to the version of Casino Royale. This is me eating crow and regretting the thought that s satire for Bond would be better than the Eon Productions.

In this reboot, M is a more overt maternal figure to Bond. I need you out of my sight. Go and stick your head in the sand somewhere and think about your future.

The first woman that we see sleeping with Bond is the wife of our first bad guy to go belly up. I actually liked her scenes with Bond because Solange is one of those characters that I always wind up falling for in these movies.

Of course she gets tortured and killed. From the moment that she picked up the phone to speak with her husband while she and Bond were rolling around on the floor, we knew that her fate was sealed.

Because neither the organization that Dimitrios worked for before his death nor Le Chiffre take kindly to betrayals, even the accidental kind.

However, the way that Bond reacts to her death—or rather, the very obvious non-reaction—is something that reinforces something that many people believe about Bond and how he feels about women.

He tries to read her and she successfully reads him. When Bond finds her in the shower, still fully dressed and shaking, he does the unthinkable.

He gets into the shower and comforts her, showing a very unexpected moment of sympathy. But the aftermath of the torture from Le Chiffre and his associates, things change.

James Bond falls for Vesper and she falls for him in return. Unlike Tracy though, Vesper betrays Bond before that. They were adorable and happy together and then—WHAM.

Regardless, he does try to rescue her. We get some unbelievably gory scenes in this attempt including a moment where Bond shoots a henchman in the eye with a nail gun and yet, Vesper still dies.

Is it a fridging or is it a sacrifice? She refuses to allow Bond to save her, dropping the key to the elevator cage to the ground into the water beneath her on purpose because of her guilt.

Too late for anyone to do anything about it, but. Why should I need more time? Bond absolutely failing at handling grief.

All he does is bottle up the emotion while outwardly showing detachment. The thing about Casino Royale for me is that even with the things I strongly dislike about the film, I like that we got this reboot.

I like that we got this look at Bond from the beginning and the way that we see what makes him tick. Yes, this includes the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of the character.

I could easily write four or five thousand words about this movie.
